Doula Services

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period.  A doula empowers parents to make informed choices and enhance their birth and parenting experiences.

What is the difference between a doula and a midwife?

Doulas and midwives support women during pregnancy and childbirth, their roles are distinct. A doula’s role is to offer emotional, physical and informational support but do not provide medical care. A midwife's role is to provide medical care and deliver babies.

What kind of care does a doula provide?

Birth doula offer prenatal support, continuous labor and birth support, and postnatal follow-up. Postnatally a doula focuses on the parent, offering support with newborn care, breastfeeding, emotional support, and practical help around the house.

You might be wondering if a doula will replace your partner or intrude?

A doula complements rather than replaces the partner’s role. They can help the partner participate at their comfort level and provide them with tools to support the birthing person.

Can a doula help if I’m having a cesarean birth?

Yes, a doula can provide valuable support during a cesarean birth, helping the mother understand the procedure, providing emotional support, and assisting with initial breastfeeding and bonding after the baby is born.

Are doulas regulated and are insured?

The answer is yes; numerous private organizations currently offer doula certification, and their training and standards vary. There are some doulas that have not completed a certification program. Most doula’s have Public Liability and Indemnity insurance coverage.

What training does a doula have?

Doulas typically undergo extensive training through recognised organizations and may also have additional certifications or areas of speciality.

What if my doula can’t make it to my birth?

Most doulas have a backup plan in place in case they are unable to attend a birth due to illness, another birth, or unforeseen circumstances.

How much does it cost to hire a doula?

Most birth doulas will cost anywhere between $500 and $2,500 per birth. While pre-birth services are often included in the birth package, your doula may charge you hourly for childbirth education services. This hourly rate can range from $25-$65, which you should factor into overall costs.
